Title
Explaining the Ethics Commission Reform Act of 2022
Description
The lives of past ethics agencies in New York, since the passage of the State’s ethics laws in 1954, have been tenuous. On July 8, 2022, the New York Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government replaced the embattled Joint Ethics Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE). As New York enters a new era of ethics oversight, this explainer examines the structure, function, and authority of the new commission—and the 2022 law that created it.
